Having been paying no mind to anything happening, more lost in her own thoughts, Sylvie is caught off guard by her little brother vying for her attention suddenly.

"Huh?" she asks as if snapped from a daze, then feels the tingle of Reyn's passive zaps, "Yeah. Let's go."

Grabbing her book off the table and tucking it under her arm, she grabs Reyn's hand with the other and the siblings walk inside.

Bel: Not that simple, huh? Let me ask you something, Cai. Do you enjoy constantly being taxed to your limits because you have to do this constantly? Because I sure don't enjoy seeing it. You could spend a lot more time with me or anyone else if you didn't have to do that.

-Taking a moment to adjust his position, he continues.-

Bel: Aren has the right of it. It could be solved without too much of a hassle. I hope. The sooner the better. Anyone gets irritated when they're tired and/or exhausted. And normally I wouldn't force anything upon anyone but in this case I won't take no for an answer. You need to rest and that's that. Only problem is, does said focus have to come from you or could I do it if you're resting?

-Bel gets up and walks towards to the building.-

Bel: I heard what you said earlier, Zarik. I'll get to that in a second, but to be honest it was surprisingly uneventful. For the most part, anyway. -The wizard walks inside the building and comes out with two glasses of water shortly after. He goes back to his seat next to Caionna, takes a few gulps of water from his own and proceeds to speak while putting the other glass in front of Caionna.-

Bel: Like I said, not much happened aside from one thing. I did run into two dragons at one point. They didn't seem to like me traveling through what I could only assume to be their "territory". Tried talking my way out but they wouldn't hear of it. So I lost patience and just told them to attack me with everything they got on the condition they'd stay out of my way if I were to live.

Sure enough, they began to charge up for two breath attacks. They actually fused together and got much stronger than they'd be on their own. Not that it helped. You should've seen their faces when the smoke had settled and they noticed their attack did next to nothing. Was a whole other tune after that. Normally I'd have attacked in return but I really wasn't in the mood to waste more time there. And that's pretty much it.

-Bel takes a few more sips of whatever. His expression gets notably sour when he hears about the dragon's advances. He lets out an audible sigh.-

Bel: I swear, they don't know when to quit. You'd think they keep what happened before in fresh memory. If not, they're dumber than I thought. Tempted to go over there and tell them to stay in their lane. Unless they want to lose a few more colors. And regarding Copley, even if they SHOULD manage to get there, they'd find nothing. I could swear I told you the place was destroyed. If anything, it'd be overgrown by now. But maybe it could be an idea to go over to that location and set one giant, explosive trap.

"Destroyed?" Neris's curiosity piqued, "I don't remember you saying that. But long enough ago it's overgrown?"

She taps on her temple to try to think for a moment. At length, she muses, "That sounds awful familiar somehow... But I can't put my finger on it."

"It should, bird brain." Aren snarks, "It's pretty similar to how we found Twem when we went there to parley with the dragons after saving you and Cai."

Turning his attention to Bel, he adds, "Though, to be fair. I don't remember mention of that either. Then again, you're not exactly keen to talk about your home to begin with."

After a pause, he makes a quick rapping rhythm on the table, saying, "But yeah, how about drawing something up to act as a focus, Cai? Bel's right. You can't just keep this up. What would dad say if he finds out he outlived not only his best student, but the one whose lifespan is supposed to dwarf even his?"

Raising an eyebrow at Bel's account, Zarik says, "If they went as far as to fuse for an attack, then that means they were aware that you weren't just some random passerby. They don't exactly resort to firepower like that for shmucks or merchants." Looking over his sister's mate, he continues, "Sure, you're a wizard of no small repute. None of us here are exactly unknown. But surely the profile of one specific elf would fade from even the most astute dragon's mind. Unless they're constantly reminded of - or on the lookout for - our band of... uh..." he hesitates and scans the room before continuing, "heroes?" A look of mild discomfort at the word crosses his face for a moment after saying it.

Shaking his head to clear his mind briefly, he continues, "Regardless. Surely the home of the elves hold some kind of importance that a thunder of dragons hellbent on world domination would be after. Maybe some kind of magic ring, or a set of them. I don't know!"

His attention then turns to Aren's suggestion, "How can you be so sure that we can even harness the massive fucking orb of magic below us. Cai can hardly contain it as she is, and she's far and away the most powerful mage of literally anyone I know. Granted, I don't know as many mages as you guys, but the ones I do know are but tiny blips compared to a veritable supernova."

"Thank you, Bel." Caionna says as she takes the glass of water from her man and greedily drains it with little thought. Putting the glass down hastily, it clacks loudly against the surface of the table.

"If only it were so simple." she says at length, "The power surged from the crystals nearly immediately upon being wrest from Aesalth's grasp." with a flick of her tail and flap of her argentine wings, she continues, "It overwhelmed my ability to contain my dragon form beyond what you see here. Which, in itself, takes quite the focus to not just fully lose any semblance of human form."

Gazing at the empty glass before her, she ponders, "If crystals so large were fit to burst upon reunion with their rightful holder, what makes any of you think you can simply restrain it?"

Without missing a beat, Aren interjects out of turn, "Why do I think we can do it? Because it's us." he beams proudly for a moment before continuing, "Besides, no one said anything about containing the energy. We just need to basically thread the flow through a crystal--"

He stops a moment at Caionna's expression of doubt at the notion, "or twelve?" he questions to an unchanged look from his adoptive sister, "Hundred?" Still no change.

"Bah! Whatever!" he grunts dismissively, "Anyway! Crystals that are attuned to what Cai does in her focus. Even if it still requires input from her, the burden would be dispersed. Even if slightly, which would be a step in the right direction."

Bel: Ah, that's right. You weren't there for when I explained what happened. It was way before we found you in that godforsaken hellhole of a dungeon. -Bel said in response to Neris.-

Bel: As for how those two dragons attacked, I'm not sure they even meant for that to happened. Their breath-attacks kinda just wove together. Doesn't really matter, though. I couldn't care less if they did it on purpose. Supposedly they just took my word for it or got pissed because I had the gall to tell them to use their full power.

-Bel takes a short break to drink some more water while pondering Zarik's mention of rings or why the dragons would target his home.-

Bel: What, you mean something that'd control each aspect of reality? Mind, Power, Soul, etc. Also, why did I say that? Either way, if there were something like that there, I've never heard mention of it.

Regarding harnessing that energy we'd need to find some sort of crystal with a near-infinite capacity then. Preferably several. Only question is where something like that could even be found. We may need to resort to less than ideal methods of procuring something like that. I'd prefer not to but I will if it'd be the only way.

Neris diverts her gaze at Bel's mention of the dungeon, and quietly says, "Oh..." the mere mention of it makes a noticeable change in her demeanor. Even though it was several lifetimes ago for her, she is visibly distressed by the mention.

Trying to compose herself, she says, "I'm sorry to hear that. Though, I suppose that would explain why an elf would want to be around people like us. I don't know a whole lot about them, but I've heard elves aren't exactly the kind of people who like to mingle."

With a shrug to Bel, Zarik says dryly, "Whatever the ring's - or rings' - power, I'm sure they're precious to someone."

Noticing the change in his wife, he goes over to her and places a hand on her shoulder. She shudders slightly at his touch, to which his jovial tone hardens and a look of concern crosses his face, knowing exactly what's wrong. 'I could have sworn she was over that,' he thinks to himself, 'but there was no way of knowing that she'd react like that after so long.'

He drags a nearby chair over and sits next to Neris, pulling her close to console her.

Caionna wearily looks over at Zarik and Neris and nods solemnly, then turns her attention to Bel, saying, "I don't know about infinite capacity. That's not quite within the limits of such a thing."

Pausing to yawn, she says, "I do know they would need to lack elemental aspect. Any pre-existing elemental sway could corrupt any energy passed through it, or amplify magic of the same aspect and throw everything into disarray. As far as procurement and execution, I defer to the artificers. I'm in tune with spellcraft, not simulacra of it."

-Bel does a bit of a mental facepalm when he sees how Neris reacts to the mention of said dungeon.-

Bel: Probably shouldn't have brought that up. Sorry about that. I didn't think it was still bothering you that much. As to why I'd "want to be around people like you", I've never been one for the whole solitary elf thing. Always chosen my own path. That's not to say that I don't appreciate some alone time every now and then.

-The wizard takes some more gulps of water from his glass before continuing.-

Bel: Even if there were powerful artifacts around my old home, you'd think they'd keep an eye on them or even mention them at some point. I haven't heard a peep about anything like that. So either there's nothing of the sort or they didn't know about it themselves. For all I know, it'd be this blade on my back.

As for crystals, they'd have to be blank slates then, so to speak. Maybe I could swipe something from those dragons. -Bel says and grins.-

Bel: To be honest, I'm just looking for an excuse to go over there and knock them down a few pegs. As if their advances aren't already bad enough.

Aren looks over to Neris and Zarik and shakes his head, unsure what to make of the sudden regression.

Turning his attention to Bel, he notes, "I don't think attacking the dragons is going to get us anywhere. In fact, i think it may even be the worst move we could make. I'm not sure if you remember, Bel, but one of the terms Zarik agreed with them on was that both sides leave the other alone."

Zarik nods as he gently pats Neris's head.

"Aren's got the right of it. We've had a good period of peace this past century or so since I less than kindly gave terms of engagement. They don't mess with us, we don't mess with them. If we break those terms, then we risk waging war." He says, matter-of-factly, "I know you tend to stay out of Twem, so you're not exactly keen on our current events, but since the jungle is nestled in a valley between the territories that are more or less happy to defend us, we've not exactly kept up on military power. And if aggression is coming from us, then the nations that are more or less neutral will side with the Reach. We have to look into this solution elsewhere."

"Okay then." Caionna interjects, "What do you propose we do? Crystals with the necessary purity aren't exactly easy to find. Who's even to say that Twilight Reach even has them in the first place? Just because they kept magical energy stolen from me, Neris, and who knows how many other mages in a crystal cache, it doesn't mean much of anything."

-The wizard puts his hand on the side of his head, resting on it for a bit.-

Bel: Hmph. I'm more concerned about the areas that are now the New Dragon Highway, so to speak. Or do you mean to tell me they treat their new territory well and the people in it. Also, speaking of Twem. I may not have been there but I was about to say that if the dragons even put a claw over that border, the gloves are off. You did tell me the stay out of there, right?

-Adjusting his position, he continues.-

Bel: Military power, huh. We're literally one man/woman armies. I mean, I don't mean to downplay people I don't know but....if they're not close to our capabilities, how could they even help defend us? Not that i wouldn't appreciate it but I'd not feel good about others basically acting as fodder, should it ever come to that. Also, you're making it sound like the Reach would still be a threat to us. I haven't been lazying around when I was gone, though.

-Bel finished his glass for water and takes a few breaths.-

Bel: And speaking of crystals. I'd say we'd first have to determine if crystals that could mimic your....magical wavelength, for lack of a better word, even exist. To be honest, I haven't really thought about such potential crystals before. After that, try and find ones with high enough purity. This is, of course, the best-case scenario. Getting something like that to work autonomously is probably next to impossible. At the very least we need to find something that'll ease the burden. Preferably by a lot.

Aaand when you put it like that, I'm not sure I could swallow my pride and go over there to ask if they have something of that caliber.

Neris finally pushes herself away from Zarik and sniffles as she dries her eyes with her shirt.

"I'm sorry for breaking down like that, guys," she says between sniffles, "it's just that I've..." she pauses and looks around before continuing, "I've been worried about Reyn. His role to the cacophony. A fate he never asked for. The thought of being reminded of what you all saved me from and comparing it to what I know about the harpies. I fear what will happen to him."

Noticing the air of the conversation, she drops her shoulders and hangs her head, "I'm sorry. I know you're all worried about other things, and this is completely out of nowhere."

Zarik lets Neris go as soon as he feels her pushing against him to allow her to move freely.

Listening to her concerns, he says, "No. It's fine." He places a hand on her head and strokes her hair as he speaks, "You've never had the longest attention span for things outside of your duty to the harpies. You're right to worry about that and not this."

Turning his attention back to Bel, he says, "Yeah. Sure. The five of us are one-man armies. But you're always out doing your own thing, Cai is always here, Neris is busy being demigoddess queen, and Aren and I are always in the workshop. The valley is fairly large and is populated with easily two thousand of our harpies. Sure, some of them know how to use weapons for hunting, but none are particularly well trained for actual combat." Heaving a sigh, he continues, "We more or less rely on Dawn Peak to keep Twilight Reach in check, which has basically meant the birds have gotten complacent. Sylvie and Reyn have the training they do specifically because i demanded it. They're powerful, but mostly off of their innate powers, and leave plenty to be desired in some aspects.

"As for Twem, itself, you were never explicitly told to stay away. Is that really why you're never there? You think we don't want you around? When did we give that impression?" A quizzical look crosses the man's face.

Picking up where Zarik left off, Aren pipes in, "Surely you're aware of the power difference between metallic and chromatic dragons. The Dawn dragons are metals." With some hesitation, he adds, "I have a few theories, but I know Zarik doesn't want to give them the time of day, so I'll leave it there."

Clearing his throat, he continues, "Anyway, the dragons can help defend Twem by... you know... being there. And being significantly faster to act and make a measurable difference in battle. Unless you're talking about the military might of the harpies, themselves. It's not about them defending us. It's about them defending themselves."
